Samsung did its part
in regards to SSD transition not long ago and it looks like Seagate is
ready to give its own products a boost, though in this case it is hard
disk drives of the portable variety that are becoming more versatile.
There are various types of storage units out
there, divided according to almost as many criteria, like base
technology, feature set, performance, etc.
In the case of hard
disk drives, one can distinguish between internal (3.5-inch desktop
models and 2.5-inch laptop ones) and external ones, which may or may not
be portable.
Portable HDDs usually have the 2.5-inch form
factor, like notebook storage solutions, while external ones that
needn't be moved too much can be even slightly larger than the 3.5-inch
form.
Among both of these, one will find units that can communicate with computers without the need for cables.
Unfortunately,
most wireless HDDs have a limitation in that, while they work just fine
with Windows systems, they don't really know how to go about thing
around Android devices, except through a method involving the latter's
browsers, when applicable.
Seagate has now announced
that its GooFlex Satellite 500 GB mobile hard disk drive will feature
the ability to synchronize with Android platforms over WiFi, via a new
app it devised.
“Seagate’s line of GoFlex external storage has
always been about enabling flexibility and part of this flexibility is
being OS agnostic,” said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general
manager for Seagate retail product group.
“Seagate GoFlex
Satellite mobile wireless storage continues with this theme of
flexibility by providing added storage to mobile devices where there may
not be a physical port to connect a cable. An Android supported app had
been part of our development plans for the product from the very start.
We are now pleased to offer the new GoFlex media app from the Android
Market,"
The 500 GB GoFlex HDD has a battery life of 5 hours
and, should one decide to just go ahead and use a cable, support for the
USB 3.0 standard as well.
