Patriot Launches the SandForce Driven Pyro SSD Series

Patriot Memory, has just announced this it has expanded its line of SATA 6Gbps solid state drives with the addition of the Pyro series SSDs, based on second generation SandForce controllers, which were designed to deliver enterprise-like performance to consumer desktops and notebooks.


Patriot's new solid state drive series will comprised three models that span in capacity between 60GB and 240GB, and all of these will use the 2.5-inch form factor that is standard for most notebooks.

At the heart of all three units stands the SandForce SF-2281 controller which features native SATA 6Gbps support as well as eight memory channels that are to be connected to NAND Flash chips.

Patriot doesn't say anything about the type of NAND these drives use, but it does provide us with a series of details regarding the performance of its Pyro Series solid state drives.

According to this information, the maximum sequential read transfer rates recorded reached 550MB/s, while sequential write speed is rated at 515MB/s. Maximum 4K random write performance is estimated at 85,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second).

As is the case with most other SSDs, the performance of the Pyro drives varies according to their capacity, as smaller-sized units don't usually have all the memory channels available from the controller populated.

Patriot's Pyro series solid state drives will ship with the latest 3.1.9 firmware. Unfortunately, Patriot Memory hasn't provided us with any information regarding the pricing of the Pyro SSDs.
